Why does heart rate climb when watts stay the same?
Same watts. Rising heart rate. After 60–90 minutes the numbers stop agreeing. Riders call it cardiac drift or aerobic decoupling. It is not a broken sensor. It is the body telling you the internal cost of the ride is going up.
The rule
Keep the power target. Read the drift. Do not chase heart rate down by dropping watts on a key session.
What the number means
Coupled: heart rate and power move together. Decoupled: heart rate climbs while power holds, or power falls while heart rate holds.
A common field cut: compare the first half of a steady block to the second half. Drift under about 5% on a long Zone 2 ride is usually fine. 5–10% is a warning. Over 10% means the ride got more expensive than the file looks — heat, under-fueling, dehydration, residual fatigue, or a Zone 2 that is not actually Zone 2.
What usually causes it
- Heat and rising core temperature
- Fluid and plasma-volume loss
- Under-fueling on a long ride
- Yesterday’s hard work still in the legs
- Riding the top of Zone 2 when you thought you were in the middle
Same watts usually cost more as the ride goes on. Heart rate up. RPE up. Late-race durability down. That is the same story as heat and durability — different dashboard light.
What people get backwards
Treating rising heart rate as proof you should dump the power target on a quality session. Softening the target turns the session into something else.
Treating a flat heart rate as proof the ride was easy. Cool weather and a short ride can hide a problem that shows up on the next hot three-hour day.
Using one 90-minute file as a fitness test. One hot, under-fueled ride will look “unfit.” Fix the conditions before you rewrite the zones.
What to do instead
On long Zone 2: hold the watts. Fuel on time, not when hungry. Drink before you are thirsty. If drift crosses ~10% and RPE is climbing hard, shorten the ride. Do not turn it into a grind.
On intervals: keep the prescribed power. Let failure cut the number of reps — not the watts. That is the same failure rule as heat.
Use drift as a durability check, not as the coach. A rider who holds watts late with small drift is more race-ready than a rider with a prettier fresh FTP and a heart rate that runs away after 90 minutes.
The week
Protect 1–2 quality sessions. If a long ride decouples badly, the next hard day usually needs to move. Easy volume can stay. Stacking threshold on top of a drifted long ride is how the week gets sloppy.
