Durability
Durability is your ability to still produce high watts late in a race or long ride—when everyone else is fading.
A fresh FTP test is useful, but it only tells you what you can do when you’re rested. What actually matters on race day is how much of that power is still available after two or three hours of hard riding.
How to train it
Build a big aerobic base. Lots of steady Zone 2 volume makes long rides feel normal instead of special. The stronger your base, the more reserve you have when the race gets hard late.
Practice the late effort. On some of your longer rides, put the hard work in the last hour instead of the first. As you get closer to your target event, make those efforts look more and more like the race itself:
- Crit racers → repeated hard sprints
- Road racers, TT specialists, or fondo riders → sustained 20-minute efforts, or short hard attacks (30 seconds to 1 minute) followed by the highest pace you can hold afterward
You’re training your body to still produce race-level power when it’s already tired.
Fuel properly. Under-fueling is one of the quickest ways to lose those late watts. Get nutrition right on the long rides and especially on race day, or the durability work won’t show up.
Don’t neglect the skills side. Durability isn’t only physiological. Poor tactics (constantly bridging gaps) or weak bike handling (scrubbing speed in corners, inefficient positioning) force you to dig deeper than necessary. Those wasted matches add up. Good positioning, clean cornering, and smart race craft are part of durability too.
The practical rule
When the week allows, put a few race-specific efforts in the final hour of a long ride. Keep the rest of the week sensible—don’t pile extra hard sessions on top of an already demanding load.
If the legs are already cooked, skip the late hard efforts. Easy volume is still valuable. Move the durability work to another day.
One well-timed late effort on a long ride will do more for your racing than endlessly chasing a higher fresh FTP number.
